Job Description

Mavericks Montauk, a wine focused steakhouse on eastern Long Island, is seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to join our team as a Sommelier and part time Floor Manager. This hybrid role will allow the right candidate to contribute to both the wine program and the daily operations of the restaurant. The ideal candidate will work as a Sommelier for the majority of each workweek and step into a Floor Manager role part-time, ensuring a smooth, memorable experience for our guests while maintaining a high standard of service. This is a seasonal role for the months of April through October. Seasonal housing is available. 

Sommelier role and responsibilities:

  • Greet guests, offer wine recommendations and pairings
  • Actively promote wine sales by upselling premium wine selections
  • Address and resolve any customer complaints regarding wine quality or service
  • Regularly inspect wine storage areas to ensure proper storage conditions and cleanliness are maintained
  • Facilitate the sale and subsequent serving of wine in accordance with the Restaurant’s service standards
  • Maintain and update wine lists
  • Monitor inventory levels
  • Complete monthly inventory count on the first day of each month
  • Provide the ordering manager with weekly inventory updates including low count and ’86ed’ items
  • Receive, unpack, and BIN incoming wine deliveries
  • Update internal inventory counts as new inventory is delivered
  • Adhere to Federal and State laws pertaining to the sale of alcohol

Floor Manager role and responsibilities:

  • Deliver superior guest service and ensure guest satisfaction
  • Recover guest complaints and opportunities with positive outcome
  • Train and evaluate staff and act as leader by example
  • Perform proper execution of opening and closing procedures, pre and post service duties
  • Assist with Restaurant operations. Ensure the smooth running of the kitchen and front of house, maintaining the quality of product and service
  • Promote and implement safe practices for all team members
  • Execute check list and tasks delegated from upper management and ownership
  • Perform all communication, administrative and weekly managerial duties in a timely manner as directed

Requirements:

  • Proven experience in a wine centered role with a strong understanding of wine regions, varietals, and pairings
  • Previous experience in a fine dining restaurant environment
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with a guest-centric attitude
  • Strong leadership abilities, with a passion for training and mentoring team members
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
  • Certification in wine knowledge (e.g., WSET, CMS) preferred
