Overview:

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on AI-assisted growth and optimization of 2D and oxide heterostructures. This position resides in the Data NanoAnalytics (DNA) group in the Theory and Computation section, Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS), Physical Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). In this role, you will work as part of an interdisciplinary team from CNMS to grow 2D materials as well as oxide thin films, and stack them to create twisted heterostructures with unique functional properties. You will also work closely with CNMS staff to utilize AI/ML methods to assist the growth and optimization of these samples on automated instruments.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

• Develop and apply synthesis techniques for optimizing the growth of oxide heterostructures using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and other methods (e.g., chemical vapor deposition (CVD)).
• Implement AI-assisted methods to enhance the synthesis process where applicable.
• Work closely with CNMS staff to modify existing growth chambers to facilitate the generation of combinatorial libraries

Basic Qualifications:

• A PhD degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline
• A minimum of 3 years of experience in thin film and/or 2D materials synthesis using techniques such as PLD, MBE, DC/RF Sputtering, or CVD.
• Basic thin film characterization techniques (X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, etc.)
• Experience with python programming for data analysis and/or machine learning

Preferred Qualifications:

• Some experience in working to create heterostructures from 2D materials (‘twisted’ structures)
• Some experience with in-situ diagnostics or characterizations during synthesis (RHEED, spectroscopy, plasma diagnostics, etc.)
• Experience with machine learning codes and automated synthesis
• Experience with advanced characterization, such as scanning transmission electron microscopy or scanning tunneling microscopy

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
• Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.

Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
