Job Description

Under the direction and supervision of studio art faculty, the Photo Lab
Technician works cooperatively with administrators, faculty, staff, students and vendors to technically manage and supervise all Burns Photography facilities, including both traditional darkrooms and a state of the art digital lab. The Photography Lab Technician/Manager works to ensure safe, secure, healthy and well-run facilities for the instructors and students; assists students and instructors; maintains various camera and lighting equipment and checks out equipment to students; and performs administrative duties related to the position.

Position Specific Accountabilities

1. Create a safe, functional, clean learning environment for photography course

students by maintaining appropriate work environments in digital lab, darkrooms and print finishing areas.

2. Provide assistance to students in completing assigned projects by reinforcing and reviewing technical information and course content, assisting with camera and lighting equipment, assisting with the evaluation of prints; assisting with darkroom processes and digital mural printing. Provide nurturing and supportive environment for students.

3. Set up demonstrations and equipment for instructors and classes.

3. Check out equipment to students, review proper use of camera and lighting equipment with students prior to rental, and inspect equipment for wear or damage arranging repairs when necessary.

4. Prepare and mix photography chemistry for use in black and white darkrooms. Follow safety requirements and follow appropriate safety precautions in the storage, handling and disposing of hazardous materials, and maintaining Material Data Safety Sheets.

5. Direct the maintenance, repair and calibration of darkroom equipment and enlargers.

6. Maintains and troubleshoots equipment in digital lab including computers, printers, and scanners; Color calibration of monitors in digital lab; Monitors the performance of supported software and hardware problems.

7. Make recommendations to faculty on the ordering of equipment and supplies and research best practices and new technological innovations in the field.

9. Provide updated inventory list of equipment and secure equipment in well

locked environment.

10. Create signage as needed, maintain a clean and well-organized space.

11. Supervise work study students in the Photography labs.

11. Supply application support for Adobe Creative Suite and scanning software including the creation of manuals and handouts.

12. Perform other reasonable duties as assigned including the documentation of departmental events.

Requisite Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE : Technical expertise in the physical handling of photo lab

Equipment. In-depth knowledge of black and white as well as color and

digital photography, all photographic formats, standard and non-

standard photographic processes and materials. Experience with studio lighting techniques and equipment, Adobe Creative suite, scanner and printer software, color calibration tools, knowledge of photo history, and contemporary practitioners in the field.

ABILITY : Requires ability to work effectively and cooperatively with

administrators, faculty, staff, students and vendors, and demonstrated

sensitivity to and respect for working with a diverse population. Ability to

establish and maintain collegial working relationships.

SKILLS : Strong management and organizational skills. Ability to

problem-solve effectively.

EDUCATION : B.A. degree or equivalent years of experience.

EXPERIENCE : Must have a minimum of 2 years related experience.

Familiarity with higher education is a plus.
