JOB TITLE: PEER SUPPORT SPECIALIST- BORN FREE/NEW BEGINNINGS

LOCATION: RIDGELAND, MS 39157

REPORTS TO: PROGRAM DIRECTOR

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES :   

Responsible for providing peer to peer support and assist with providing emotional support and guidance to individuals navigating mental health challenges or substance use recovery.  The Peer Support Specialist works with the care team by utilizing lived experience to empower others, fostering hope, promoting self-determination, and assisting in the development of recovery plans. Peer Support Service is an individualized, recovery-focused serv ice that allows individuals the opportunity to learn to manage their own recovery and advocacy process    

ESSENTIAL DUTIES :  

Providing recovery support to individuals enrolled in treatment for alcohol or drug use disorders by linking them to appropriate recovery services, including self-help groups.  

Collecting data from clients at intake and follow-ups.  

Documenting all services.  

Developing and implementing recovery action plans that include one-on-one mentoring and activities related to recovery.  

Conducting support meetings, developing recovery strategies, and responding to consumer emergencies as needed.  

Collaborating with mental health professionals to establish treatment plans .  

Providing coaching and emotional support for clients, individually and during support group sessions .  

Connecting clients with resources related to housing, employment and additional treatment .  

Helping clients manage appointments with mental health professionals .  

Reporting concerns about health and safety to other members of the care team .  

Keeping accurate records of client encounters .  

Writing recovery support plans to update client's electronic files .  

Maintaining client confidentiality  

Refers to community outreach programs.  

Safeguards the women's dignity and protects the rights and individuality of each women and child under his/her supervision.  

Maintains appropriate boundaries and remains in compliance with HIPAA privacy laws.  

Maintains good communication with the team.  

Participates in assigned meetings.  

Completes and maintains all service documentation and statistics as required .  

Other duties as assigned .  

KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE :   

This position requires a high school diploma/GED and must have received a Peer Support Specialist Certification OR be willing to obtain certification within 120 days of hire.  

SKILLS / ABILITIES :  

Ability to provide education and advocacy.  

Ability to respond quickly to time sensitive requests.  

Ability to engage with various family dynamics and build partnerships.  

Ability to attend a combination of assigned trainings, meetings, and supervision through the use of te chnology i ncluding Zoom and other online  meeting applications.  

Demonstrates excellent problem solving and conflict resolution skills.  

Demonstrates strong commitment to women and children as well as holds a value that family connections are paramount and demonstrates competence in working with families involved in the child welfare system.  

Demonstrates ability to evaluate situations and make decisions regarding case services or family needs.  

Knowledge of community resources available for support services .  

Demonstrate awareness of, sensitivity to, and competence in dealing with a culturally and socioeconomic diverse client population.
