Position Highlights

University Facility Services is looking to fill a Painter II in our Paint Shop. We are looking for a experienced painter who can join our team and assist in a variety of tasks in support of keeping our campus beautiful.

Painters at the University of Arizona must have the ability to apply various paints to walls, ceilings, equipment, signage, and additional irregular surfaces such as parking lots, streets, and athletic fields.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Applies protective and decorative coats of paint, varnish, lacquer and/or other related materials to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, furniture, equipment and other structures.
  • Washes, scrapes, sands, torches and/or levels interior and exterior surfaces prior to painting, varnishing, lacquering or applying other related materials.
  • Cleans equipment, paint mixing area and work area.
  • Operates compressors, striping machines, sandblasters, spray equipment and other small power equipment.
  • Installs, repairs and maintains drywall, wall texturing and ceiling acoustic texturing.
  • Operates heavy equipment including scissor lifts, boom lifts and swing stages to heights of 80 feet.
  • Erects various types of scaffolding, staging, ladders and planks to reach surfaces work area.
  • Applies paints, stains, surface preparatory materials and undercoating materials to a variety of surfaces, as appropriate according to Safety Data Sheets within established hazardous materials guidelines.
  • Determines appropriate color for new or replacement applications through consultation with customer.
  • Maintains existing paint surfaces through matching and tinting of appropriate paint products.
  • Prepares and implements line striping layouts for streets, parking lots and athletic fields according to ADOT and the various Athletic requirements.
  • Identifies, safely handles and appropriately disposes of paints, stains, preparatory and undercoating materials and other hazardous materials.
  • Creates and applies graphics and signage layouts according to ADOT, Safety and ADA requirements to meet state and federal regulations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials and application techniques common to the painting trade.
  • Knowledge and skill in hazardous materials handling, application and disposal.
  • Knowledge of text and display requirements for signage applications.
  • Skill in the preparation and application of paints, stains and surface preparation materials to a wide variety of surfaces.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to move/lift up 65 lbs.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Journeyman level position. Completion of a high school education or an equivalent combination of apprenticeship program, technical training and/or experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy .


Preferred Qualifications

  • Commercial and/or residential experience.
  • University setting experience.
