Job Summary:

The Organizational Development Specialist (ODS) is an integral member of the Multicultural Student Center (MSC) staff and is primarily responsible for overseeing programmatic initiatives that support multicultural student organizations, including management of the MSC's student organization affiliation program (serving 90+ orgs annually) and administration of the Multi-Cultural Council Grant for student organizations (disbursing up to $30,000 annually). The ODS serves as a resource for multicultural student organizations by providing guidance, support, and referrals to effectively navigate university policies and procedures and by developing workshops and trainings that support organizational development, success and sustainability. The ODS maintains a network of communication with relevant campus partners, including the Center for Leadership and Involvement, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Identity and Inclusion units, and the Associated Students of Madison. This position reports to the MSC's Assistant Director for Operations and Outreach.

Responsibilities:

Advises multicultural student organizations and student leadership and affiliates, develops and executes programming, and serves on institutional committees to support multicultural students and their allies.
  • 20% Provides consultation, resources, and referrals concerning multicultural affairs to various audiences
  • 30% Assists organizations in developing and implementing sustainable leadership practices; and navigating established policies, procedures, and resource management strategies
  • 20% Schedules logistics and secures resources for academic, cultural and social programs and events that contribute to the recruitment and retention of multicultural students and the enrichment of the institutional community
  • 10% Serves as liaison to various committees regarding initiatives and best practices
  • 10% Administers the Multicultural Council Grant for student organizations, including supervision of a student intern and management of financial transactions
  • 10% Manages the MSC's student organization affiliation program, including dual-registration process, tracking of requirements, provision of benefits, convening of leadership development workshops/conferences, and ongoing consultation and support

Tasks:

  • Serve as a resource for multicultural student organizations, providing support and guidance in effectively serving the needs of their constituents and maintaining a dynamic, positive student experience for multicultural students and allies.
  • Provide consultation, information and referrals that help student organizations effectively navigate and negotiate campus policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Develop workshops and trainings that support student organization development, including recruitment, retention, transition, leadership development, sustainable infrastructure, communication, conflict resolution, budgeting, grant writing, etc.
  • Manage a communications strategy that builds rapport and buy-in among affiliated student organizations, including electronic newsletter, internal communications system, MSC website, and social media content.
  • Become trained in Restorative Justice practices and facilitate conflict resolution for MSC affiliated organizations and their members.
  • Assist multicultural student organizations with coordinating their events and activities to maximize collaboration and impact while minimizing conflict, overlap and duplication.
  • Lead programs designed to highlight and support multicultural student organizations, including but not limited to the semesterly multicultural student organization fairs, MCOR: cultural showcase, and Multicultural Graduation and Leadership Awards.
  • Serve on campus committees that support the Student Organization experience at UW-Madison, including but not limited to: Dual Affiliated Partners, Funding and Resources, Leadership Certificate Program, and Restorative Justice Community of Practice.
  • Supervise two student interns. One focused on student organization support and one focused on distribution of the multicultural council grant.
  • Develop assessment methods to gather data on the effectiveness and impact of the student organization affiliation model, its benefits, and requirements. Collect feedback from students, advisors, and stakeholders to identify areas of growth

Qualifications:

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
One year of relevant full-time professional experience. (Note: One year of graduate experience = year of professional experience). Acceptable professional experience areas: multicultural student services and programming, student activities and leadership, student organization development, residential life, multicultural community development and education.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Demonstrated knowledge of issues and challenges related to marginalized populations in student organizations
- Theoretical knowledge and practical application of student development, multicultural identity development, intersectionality, and complexity of social identities
- Proven record of strong program planning, coordination, and organization skills
- Strong communication skills (written, oral, and electronic)

Preferred Qualifications:
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects with complex logistics, including the successful
management and supervision of multiple staff
- Ability to foster collaborative networks and partnerships to benefit students
- Ability to facilitate identity-based dialogue groups, programs, and workshops
- Capacity to make difficult decisions quickly and flexibility to handle multiple tasks
- Demonstrated ability to develop assessment strategies and utilize data to inform change

Depending on Qualifications
The expected minimum starting salary for this position is $50,000.00 annually. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications.
