Summary

The Assistant Teacher supports the Teachers and the Director by helping to create a caring and safe environment for the children and assisting in activities to improve the overall care and quality of education. S/he must be able to communicate, listen and work well with others in a team environment. Assisting the staff in implementing a quality educational program and in developing positive relationships with the children and their parents, the assistant teacher observes and documents children's interest and progress, and relays that information back to parents and staff. Assistant teachers are responsible for implementing developmentally appropriate activities based on children's interests and needs under the direction of the Teacher and the Director.

Duties

  • Assists in managing, directing, and coordinating high-quality, child care programs and activities for assigned classroom and age group.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, local, and ?Step Up to Quality? regulations as they relate to program areas.
  • Ensures YMCA standards are met, safety procedures are followed, and ensures the safety and well-being of children as a first priority.
  • Interacts with children on their individual levels of development.
  • Assists in development and implementation of weekly lesson plans that are effective and fit children?s needs, interests, and developmental level.
  • Assists with planning and posting meals and snacks that meet all nutritional guidelines.
  • Manages and controls program budget and ensures program operates within budget and program fees are collected.
  • Implements marketing for child care programs that positively impact the attendance registration of these programs.
  • Assists with developing and maintaining relationships with state child care licensing agency, school administration, parent groups, and other organizations and agencies related to the assigned programs.
  • Trains, supervises, and evaluates staff on YMCA policies and procedures regarding the center, state licensing, interactions, supervision of children, and communication with parents.
  • Responds to all agency, parent, and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
  • Documents and reports to the Lead Teacher any special needs or problems of an individual child, staff, or parent(s).
  • Aids in maintaining the appearance of the classroom/outside areas which includes keeping supplies, materials and equipment in the rooms in a neat and orderly fashion.
  • Attends staff meetings and ongoing trainings (15 hours per year or 4 5 hours per three years to include first aide, communicable disease recognition and prevention, CPR and child development classes.)

Requirements

  • Education:  High school diploma, GED, or equivalent. Associate?s degree in Child Development, Education or related field preferred.
  • Certifications:  Current First Aid, Communicable Disease, Child Abuse Recognition and Prevention and CPR certifications or willingness to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Experience:  Must have experience working with children.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Possess knowledge and understanding of the developmental stages of a child.
  • Have proficient computer skills.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) while maintain alertness for long periods of time.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to interpret, adopt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Must be creative and enthusiastic to staff and program participants.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills with families, children, and other staff.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
  • Ability to maintain emotional control and composure in turbulent, challenging and changing conditions.

Benefits

Part Time, 20-30 hours/week.
Shifts are Monday-Friday between 6:30am-6:00pm.
Starting wage $13.00/hour
Individual YMCA Membership included
