Job Title: Director of Development

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Position Summary: The Director of Development leads the development team to ensure the organization has the financial resources necessary to cover operating costs, expand initiatives, and execute successful campaigns. The ideal candidate will bring a strong executive presence and proven leadership abilities. This role is responsible for managing major gifts, annual giving, events, and donor stewardship. The Director will collaborate closely with the Leadership Team and Board to achieve fundraising goals and support organizational growth.

Key Responsibilities
  • Development Leadership:
    • On an annual basis, create a fund development plan.
    • Develop and implement targeted fundraising strategies to meet organizational goals while ensuring an increase in both restricted and unrestricted revenue.
    • Manage major and planned gifts, annual giving, grants, and fundraising events.
    • Partner with Events Coordinator to achieve fundraising goals associated with SafeHouse Denver’s signature events.
    • Participate in Leadership Team strategic meetings. The Leadership Team is currently composed of the CEO, CFO, Director of Residential Services, Director of Survivor Services, and Director of Development.
  • Donor Relations and Stewardship:
    • Cultivate and solicit high-net-worth prospects and current major donors in collaboration with the CEO.
    • Develop personalized engagement and stewardship strategies to strengthen donor relationships and increase giving.
    • Partner with the Communications Specialist to ensure donor-specific messaging aligns with and follows the proper cadence.
  • Board and External Relations:
    • In collaboration with the CEO, enhance fundraising efforts and engagement with the Board of Directors, and continue to educate the board about their development roles and responsibilities.
    • Attend community events with key stakeholders.
  • Team Management:
    • Oversee development team members, including the Individual Giving Manager and the Development Manager.
    • Provide leadership, guidance, and coaching to development team members.
  • Budget and Data Management:
    • Draft and manage the development department budget; ensure alignment with organizational goals.
    • Partner with the CFO to ensure communication about fundraising outcomes and evolving organizational needs.
    • Oversee donor data management and reporting, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of experience and education. CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive) designation is preferred.
  • Experience:
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in nonprofit development or fundraising, including at least 3 years in a director role.
  • Proven track record in securing major gifts and developing and executing comprehensive fundraising strategies.
  • Previous capital campaign experience is a plus.

Skills: ​​​​​​​

  • Strong understanding of fundraising principles and best practices.
  • Proficiency in donor management systems. (SafeHouse Denver currently uses DonorPerfect-CRM)
  • Excellent strategic thinking, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Innovative and growth mindset to exceed fundraising goals.
  • Abilities:
    • Strong interpersonal skills and a proven ability to navigate complex environments with a high level of professionalism and poise.
    • Able to confidently engage with stakeholders and represent the organization externally.
    • Proven track record of effective collaboration and department leadership.
What We Offer:
  • Starting annual salary range: $80,000-$95,000. Full-time exempt position. Performance evaluations with an opportunity for merit-based increases after one full year of employment.
