Job Description:

Syracuse University is seeking a Datacenter Manager who will be responsible for the strategic and day to day operations of the facilities and network of two datacenters as well as an additional telecom facility. Requires the ability to proactively optimize the balance of space, cooling and power in a dynamically changing environment. Works as a liaison between IT and the Facilities department to facilitate the hands-on upgrade and repair of cooling and power equipment. Requires basic knowledge of power and cooling technologies as well as knowledge of networking and structured cable management including fiber and copper. Requires excellent communication skills as well as the ability manage projects and interact effectively with multiple departments at multiple levels including networking, facilities and IT. Must be able to supervise and motivate technicians towards successful outcomes.

Syracuse Universitys 6,000 square foot primary data center on South Campus houses 80 cabinets, over 900 servers and 2 Petabytes of storage. It is backed up by two, 750kw generators, and two 625kw UPSs. The secondary location on Main Campus is 5,000 square feet and contains 62 cabinets, over 700 pieces of hardware and 6.2 petabytes of storage relying upon dual UPSs and a 750kw generator. The two are linked by 488 strands of fiber divided across two diverse routes. There is also a backup hosted location in Boston.



Education and Experience:

  • Certifications and training in networking, project management, electrical and HVAC technologies.
  • Relevant two year degree preferred as well as five plus years experience.


Skills and Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of power, cooling, networking, project management and people management.


Responsibilities:

  • Manage projects that involve coordination of power, cooling and network and cabling changes.
  • Communicate with Facilities, vendors, researchers, server administrators and networking team.
  • Understand the impact of changes and obtain approval from management when risks to the environment are added.
  • Proactively redesign the power, cooling, cabling and network environment in order to meet changing needs.
  • Communicate with and make recommendations to different stakeholders involved including server administrators, researchers, networking team, electrical and HVAC technicians.
  • Obtain bids for work that is outsourced.
  • Negotiate pricing and coordinate the work with outside vendors.
  • Work closely with electrical, HVAC, Networking and wiring groups on campus to ensure that there is awareness of risks in the current environment and negotiate timing of changes in order to reduce risk.
  • Work with IT staff and vendors who have equipment in hosted area to provide visits and coordination of repairs.
