The South Dakota Department of Education is looking for a motivated individual to fill the Child Nutrition Programs Assistant Director position in the Division of Child and Adult Nutrition Services. This position is responsible for the supervision and direction of the Child Nutrition Programs with a focus in the Child and Adult Care Food Program and Summer Food Service Programs and a support to the School Nutrition Programs. This position works independently and as a team and will assist the program director in leading the management, evaluation , and validation activities required to operate the nutrition programs with integrity and within state and federal compliance.

This is a full-time, 40 hours weekly position with the Department of Education. Collaboration with federal partners and travel is frequent. Flexibility for travel schedule is allowed. The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Bachelor's degree in food science, business, nutrition, or a related field. Experience with supervision, collaboration, policy, and program management as well as budget, contract, and grant management.

Knowledge of:

  • state and federal laws, regulation, and guidance in the child nutrition programs, including procurement;
  • basic nutrition and food safety; and
  • contract management.
Skill to:

  • work as a servant leader in a dynamic, collaborative team;
  • manage grant requirements, reporting, and program evaluations;
  • identify and minimize program risks;
  • effectively direct staff and self to manage competing short and long-term projects, deadlines, and needs; and
  • perform job functions professionally, accurately, on time, and with integrity.
Ability to:
  • continuously learn and adapt to updates in state and federal laws, regulations, guidance, and policies, and to improve operations;
  • build professional relationships to work in collaboration with coworkers, districts, local agencies, and stakeholders;
  • communicate tactfully and effectively with federal, state, and local agency personnel, administrators, the public, and staff;
  • travel in and out of state;
  • work with Microsoft Office tools such as Outlook, Word, and Excel and various state and federal online computer applications.
